And although we would have our own individual reasons, probably common to us all is the attraction to a form of photography that encompasses a great many other forms.  What other genre would require you to know everything from portraits and families, to product stills and landscapes? A bride and groom’s personalities really colour every experience so the dynamics of what we do is different each time.

We thought it would make for interesting discussion to create a list of photographers that our own group of Saxon Colers derive creativity from. What we found perhaps the most intriguing was that this list comprised predominantly of photographers who are not within the wedding industry at all.

In hindsight, I guess this makes sense from the point of view that the best inspiration comes from those who compel us to look at things in a different way, in someone else’s shoes, outside the proverbial square. It’s the innovation in the work of these photographers, the power in their imagery, and their left-field thinking that we look upon to spark an idea and nab that unique image.

Edward Weston - an old school pioneer in exploring the female form, body and curves.

 

Mark Zibert - a UK based concept photographer that has got to be one of the most creative guys we've seen in a long time.

 

Kelley Ryden - she does some fantastic baby photos, based in the U.S.A. Kelley has become extremely popular with her unique fresh style with newborn portraits.

 

Urs Bulhman - AIPP Australian photographer of the year 2008. Best known for his amazing car images that he shoots for advertising. We've had the good fortune of speaking with Urs on a number of occassions and he's got to be one of the most passionate photographers we've ever met.

 

Mario Testino - famous peruvian fashion/celebrity photographer, has shot the likes of Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts. You may not know the name but if you see some of his images you may recognise them.

 

Eolo Perfido - One of our favourites. An up and coming Italian photographer known for having commissioned some huge fashion jobs with a little studio the size of half a garage.

 

and finally, Markus Klinko & Indrani - A strong duo who also shoot fashion with an edge and have a talent for the bizarre and unexpected.

It all did...

The ceremony was held at the Chinese Gardens at Darling Harbour and the reception afterwards was at Dede’s Restaurant in Abbortsford. Love the fascinator that draped Lauren’s gentle face and the last rays of sun that trickled over the wharf towards the end of the day.

We had a good feeling about Lauren and Ken from the moment we met with them over a year ago now. She had a strong conception of how she wanted her day portrayed and never wavered from this vision. Lovely bride and groom have recently come back from honeymoon in Thailand and will be seeing their complete set of images this week!

We wanted them to have snippets of all things Sydney so started off at Hyde Park with a side visit to St. Mary’s Cathedral, Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair for a vantage point of the Bridge, right by the steps of the Opera House, and finished off at Martin Place for night shots.

At Saxon Cole he was our prize up-and-comer, the mad hatter with a sharp camera eye, the rogue photographer we loved like a little brother whose crazy genius always made us giggle – albeit nervously!

Always one to give us just a little bit of grief, it was a sad day last year when Jaypee broke the news to us that he was taking Victoria (makeshift Saxon Cole model) and Rylan (two year old photographer prodigy) up to Cairns to buy a place of their own. And even more grief was that the wedding was to be held in Cairns, and scheduled during the absolute busiest week of the Sydney-spread Saxon Cole wedding calendar!

All jokes aside, it was an honour to hear that they wanted their alma mater Saxon Cole to capture their day. We are immensely proud of Jaypee and Victoria, and all they have accomplished with setting up their own photography studio in Cairns and raising their cheeky-monkey gorgeous son, Rylan.

See below for the ceremony held at Angsana Palm Cove in a quaint little chapel, followed by a reception at the urbanely alfresco Far Horizons restaurant.

Vic, you look positively radiant, and we can only hope to have done this justice in your images. Rylan, we miss you tonnes little man. Jaypee, just come back already.

Below is a short video shot using our 5D mark II’s. Jaypee and his groomsmen thought we were setting up for a shot when they realised that we were filming them instead.

You see so much of Jaypee’s character in this reel as the boys break into dance, get into a huddle, and start giggling like girls. It was funny enough to us just watching them carry on, but only afterwards did we learn that the in-joke was that at Jaypee’s bucks night a couple of days before, they were so drunk that they were doing this exact same dance but completely naked ..

Thanks for your time Dave, tell me, what got you started in capturing video for weddings, and how long have DnM been around for?
It was September 2004 that I filmed my first wedding for a friend - and soon after, DnM Wedding Films was born.  I'd always had an interest in capturing moments with both photos and video, but it was in finding an ability to tell a compelling story through video and in seeing people's reactions to those stories that I found my passion. 

 


I noticed and appreciated that when we worked together for Nicole's wedding, your team was fairly unobtrusive, is this typical of what clients would expect when they book DnM?
Absolutely. Our approach to the day is to candidly capture events as they naturally unfold without imposing on the day itself. We also make a strong point of working with the wedding photographers to make sure that we all get the shots we need.

 

 

 

What gets your team excited when you're capturing a bride's wedding day?
In creating a wedding film, our aim is to make a film that not only captures the events of the day.  Many wedding videos are just that ... a record of what happened.  But what makes a great wedding film is capturing who the people are at that time in their lives.  That takes a much keener eye and greater story-telling skills.  What I love most when filming is when I see the story unfolding.  Every story and each couple are different - and I love finding the couple's characters and looking for a creative way to tell their story.  Weddings have such a great energy and we love capturing that.

Introducing our lovely Daniela and Jaz. Don’t let their youthful looks deceive you. They have been together for a decade (an unfathomable concept i know), and we’re amazed that what may have started off as puppy love at school developed into one enough to rival the sweetest of fairytales.

And here’s one for the storybooks... as Daniela got out of her bridal car before the ceremony a huge gust of wind blew the veil from her head and onto the outer wall of the church – many many feet above ground. Tensions had no sooner raised, bridesmaids panicked, and priests alarmed, when a similar, yet opposite gust of wind blew the veil right back down. Oh the poetry!

Here’s an email we received this week from Brett & Geoff who celebrated their union in a commitment ceremony two years ago on this very day. Happy anniversary guys!

Well we will be celebrating our 2 year anniversary on Wednesday. 2 years later and we still cant stop looking at our photos and we have constant compliments on them. I had to send you an email as we finally just got one of our photos enlarged.

I ADORE this photo and am so happy you guys captured that exact moment I was looking for. Betty’s Soup Kitchen was such a special place to us when we were dating. This pic is now a huge 118cm x 90cm hanging over our mantle piece.

I do still drop in to see your blog from time to time and am always recommending you to people as I want them to have the best photographers part of there day as we did ours.

There’s super-planner Suzie, suspender-rockin’ Rey, and uber-cuddly Honey. Very cosy!

We decided to give the concept of ‘vintage’ a bit of a twist, and Suzie brought along an old bike, which is a theme they have carrying through their wedding invites. We always aim to take our couples to places few would recognise, but this particular shoot may have people wondering both where and when these images may have been taken. Looks very 1940s to us. Nice work Suzie!
